| CaT is six days away |
| |
On June 3rd CaT, Creativity and Technology, is taking place in NYC. CaT is headed up by Nick Parish, former killer Creativity writer, who has this to say about the day. "We're completely excited to have certifiable masters from many different disciplines coming together to celebrate two vital areas of our business and society: Creativity and Technology. CaT will be practical, inspirational, and vital for raising your aesthetic IQ and digital horse sense along with some of the best in the game". A full list of speakers, with video interviews, is on the CaT site and today they released the conference opener created by Mekanism. Interesting in attending what will no doubt be a great event? Tickets are still available here.

| Three goodies |
| |
Today I'm posting two spots that I've been meaning to post for a while, but never got around to, and one that I saw for the first time last night. First is this super cool spot for Matthew Williamson's summer 09 collection for H&M by Johan Renck through H&M Red. I have also been a fan of Dos Equis' Most Interesting Man in the World campaign for some time now. Here's the latest installment (so good) by Euro RSCG Worldwide, NY. And finally this Stella Artois Légère commercial from Mother directed by Bryan Buckley. I actually laughed out loud last night when I saw on TV (Mr. Glossy was shocked that I had not seen it before). Enjoy.

| Try on a beard with Gillette app uArt |
| |
Okay, I don't even have facial hair (thank god) and I found this really fun. uArt is a new iPhone app from Gillette where you can upload your pic & try out different looks via shaving away from a full face of hair. Check out my pics here. The first one is their template and the second is my chic new look. The shaver is not very easy to navigate, but perhaps that is just my lack of facial shaving experience. Either way, it's really fun and it's free. Agency is Agency: BBDO/Proximity Malaysia / BBDO, New York. Found on Creativity.

| Ads for Vampires |
| |
I can't wait for season two of True Blood to start on June 14th (from what I hear, chicks dig it more than guys). To promote the second season, HBO has created these fake ads, for real brands, targeting vampires. Bloody good (sorry, couldn't resist). Found via Creativity.

| The Bessies |
| |
The Bessies, Canada's big broadcast advertising awards show, was this past Thursday night. I meant to get a post up on Friday, but I got busy with a few things & neglected to do it (shame). Here's a rundown on the winners, what I liked and what I didn't like. The show opened with Bos' Mr. Tree, part of the Mac's Froster WTF? campaign, which won a gold for campaign (nothing like opening a show with some girl-on-girl action). DDB Vancouver won Best in Show Campaign for their Must Drink More Milk campaign (the Russian Dolls is my fav) and john st. picked up Best in Show Single for their War Child viral. As a big fan of Sid Lee, I was happy to see their adidas House Party pick up a Gold and I also love this spot for XBox, which I had never seen before, via Taxi 2 and directed by Industry's Alex Ogus. This Alka-Seltzer spot won a Gold and although it's funny, it's just a total total rip-off of Flight of the Concords (humm...is it okay to win an award for knocking off a TV show?). The full list of finalists and winners is here.

| School wins at AICE |
| |
Congratulations to my friends over at School for picking up three honors last night at the AICE (Association of Independent Creative Editors) Awards Show in LA. It was the most awards given to an individual company (okay, they tied for that honor). Mark Morton won in the Public Service category for his “Struggle” spot for Parkinson’s Society Canada via Taxi 2, Toronto. Griff Henderson scored the Best of Toronto honor for Wiser's "New Shirt" via John St., Toronto. Aaron Dark won the Under $50,000 category for Toronto International Film Festival/Cadillac's "Scream," Via McLaren McCann, Toronto. View all three winning spots here.

We've all heard the stories of people losing their jobs over Twitter (idiots), well here's one about someone getting a job. Congrats Chris and it's wonderful that he donated the $200 to charity.

| Phoenix 1901 collaboration video |
| |
I'm a big fan of Phoenix and can't wait for their new album to be released on May 25th. Last week a video was released for their song 1901. It's a collaboration between Phoenix and Dazed Digital, directed by Bogstandard and it premiered on MTV. So good. View it on the Phoenix site and more info, including an interview, is on Dazed Digital. You a fan of Phoenix? I snapped these pics of them with my phone in 2007.

| Love is New |
| |
I'm digging this new vid, Love is New, and song from Broken Social Scene's Brendan Canning. For those familiar with Toronto, it's shot in Kensington Market. Shelley Lewis, who directed it, says it "pays homage to the intro of Travolta's Saturday Night Fever...shot for shot". Look for cameos of many Canadian indie musicians. Thanks to JN for the link.

There's a celebration on The FWA today as they celebrate their 50 millionth visitor. You can join in the celebration by adding your pic via a Facebook app and Skip, the emcee of the celebrations, is hilarious. Congrats to Rob Ford and the team at The FWA.

This article on Creative Reviews' blog is something you should read if you are in advertising - it's about how many great ads are "inspired" by films on YouTube. Work discussed includes Sony Bravia's Play Doh, Honda Cog and more recently Aero Bubbles.

| Psyop, Milk & PMS |
| |
The latest from Psyop for California Milk Processor Board has an unexpected twist - the little known fact that Milk helps to fight the symptoms of PMS (who knew). Sorry to spoil it for you, but that is how Sad Princess ends. The second spot, Medusa, highlights that milk is good for taming unruly locks. Both spots, created in the style of classic fairy tales, are headed up by Psyop's Marie Hyon and Marco Spier, who gave a sneak peak of Sad Princess at F5. The surprise ending, the PMS bit, got a big laugh from the crowd. Agency is Grupo Gallegos. Full credits, some background info from Psyop on the campaign and a selection of stills are posted here.

| Nanospore for Royal Elastics |
| |
Nanospore, who created this great spot for Royal Elastics a few months back, has just completed this beautiful site for the same brand. The music is so calming that I think I'll keep it open all day and it's funny when you pick the little orange guy up, lift him to the sky & then watch him drop into the water (it's okay, he'll survive). Thanks to Alex at Blacklist for the link.

| Dougal Wilson and Calvin Harris for Coca-Cola |
| |
Hello loyal Glossy-ites. While Shannon's sleeping I thought I'd get in nice and early to tell you that Dougal Wilson's new Coca-Cola spot is now up on shots. The music comes care of Calvin Harris (him of Acceptable in the 80s acclaim) and there's a longer :90 floating around that's got an extended cut of his track on it... Bonus points to anyone who can get their hands on that one.

I was looking for something humorous to post today and I went over to Agency Spy and there it was staring me in the face. See it here. Apparently this copy came from a copywriter for whom English is a second language. Oopsies. It's from a section called Copy Conundrums.

| Go See Art & Copy |
| |
This past Friday night I was lucky enough to attend the premiere of Art & Copy, a film by Doug Pray, at Hot Docs in Toronto. I'm an ad geek and love all things advertising, so I went into this film wanting to like it. I came out loving it and even learned a few things (added bonus). Things I learned; The Carpenters' "We've Only Just Begun" was commissioned by Hal Riney for a California bank, Nike's "Just Do It" was inspired by the famous last words of American spree killer Gary Gilmore - "Let's do it!", and the client almost killed the famous "Got Milk?" because it's grammatically incorrect. Good stuff, no? Art & Copy was also in the official selection for Sundance (2009) & will be coming to a screen near you soon. Go see it. Boards' Kevin Ritchie interviews Pray here.

| Friday on BrainFarts |
| |
I love a good rant, so I was happy to see that Gary Watson, co-creative director of Bos, Toronto has started a blog, BrainFarts (I love the name almost as much as the logo), and to differentiate BrainFarts from other blogs, Watson has created a weekly Friday rant (yay). Last week's rant, titled Jaded About Green, focuses on all the brands jumping on the "green" bandwagon (should be "brandwagon" with all who are now riding on it). I'm looking forward to what he has to rant about today. You should check it out.
If you'd like to view some of Watson's creative work, check out these great spots for Mac's Froster (a Canadian convenience store slurpy) Bloody Zit, Mr. Tree and Jose's Garden as well as these street stunts to promote Canada's first Ad Week.
