Republic of Ideas
I received an email with a link to Republic of Ideas. I've become a "citizen" (see the link), even though I'm not sure what it is or what "but somewhere along the way creative chaos got organised" means (please note North American's that in the UK they spell organize with an "s". That is not a typo). Any thoughts? Comments? I hope they don't spam me.

Bad things happen when you are bored
Here's the latest campaign from director Lena Beug for Ireland's entertainment.ie. The two spots, Shave and Dust, were produced by Redrage Films via Cawley Nea TBWA, Dublin. Lena recently signed to RSA, which just celebrated its 40th birthday, for both US and UK representation. You can view her current showreel here.

NASCAR: FanDangler & FanTandem
Here's the latest from Biscuit director Tim Godsall for Toyota. As with most of Godsall's work, the performances are great (the "he'll be fine" cracks me up). View FanDangle and FanTandem here. Agency is Saatchi & Saatchi, Los Angeles. View full credits here.

Flight of the Conchords
I've just recently gotten hooked on HBO's Flight of the Conchords (in Canada you can get it on TMN on Demand). HKM director Michael Patrick Jann recently directed an episode and you can watch excepts of it, including two musical numbers (my favourite bits), here.

Tommy and Marco are cheap
I especially like this new McDonald's spot, Competition, because I once worked in an office with one of these George Costanza types (cough, Peter Monet). Haven't we all? Agency is DDB Chicago. Directed by Biscuit's Rick LeMoine.

A world without dairy
I'd take a piece of cheese over a piece of cake any day. I love cheese, I love dairy & actually drink glasses of milk on a daily basis (some people find that weird). That said, I really like this new spot from Taxi Montreal for the Dairy Farmers of Canada depicting a world without dairy. For more great milky goodness, check out the Head Gear milk spots a few posts below this one.

Psyop's Mate wins at NY Cut & Paste 2007
Congratulations to Psyop's Jan Mathias Steinforth, aka Mate, for winning at this year's NY chapter of Cut & Paste. A video announcing his win is here. View Mate's winning images on the Cut & Paste site here. On a side note, Psyop’s Gerald Ding recently competed in the World Jiu Jitsu Championship in Long Beach, California. He didn't win this year, but looked good while doing it with Psyop-designed badges. Hmmm... maybe Psyop designs better than it fights.

Head Gear Animation Milk Dots
Head Gear Animation is working on 50 spots for the Dairy Farmers of Canada. As each spot is completed, it begins airing. Although short, they are full commercials. Through testing the agency discovered that teens (the target audience) have a low attention span, so they decided to make a whole bunch of very short ads. The creative brief was that the spots be made odd, quirky, yet also rich. The Head Gear directors and animators are going for completely different looks in each of the 50 spots. View the completed ones here. View the full campaign credits here.

Feist for new iPod Nano
I love this Feist video for 1234 and was happy to see that Apple chose it for their new iPod Nano commercial. View the original video, directed by Patrick Daughters (The Directors Bureau), here. It makes me want to dance around in a sequined cat suit...oddly, not a new iPod. I'm happy with mine.

Playing with little people
What do you get when you cross Takeshi's Castle, little people and online gambling? Not a tasteless joke, but this new UK campaign for Intercasino via Personal, London and Therapy Films director Tim Brown. The UK laws changed on 1st September 2007, allowing gambling to be advertised on TV for the first time. Two of these four spots began airing at 12:01 am on September 1st, the other two begin airing this week. Watch all four spots here. Full credits and creative brief are here.

Milosh Makes Music
I met Mike Milosh on Facebook yesterday (that sounds weird) - he's friends with a couple of friends of mine. Anyway, it turns out that Milosh makes great music. Here are two of his music videos: The City and You Make Me Feel. The latter changes every time you play it based on the time of day, time of year and the weather. Cool. Both are off the album Meme.

CNN & ABC speak out on new Clearasil campaign
Here are two very entertaining news stories on the new Clearasil campaign via Euro RSCG New York, directed by Brian Lee Hughes (OPC). View the ABC story here and the CNN here. The best line from the latter is "you've got horny awkward teen in the middle..." Mike Galanos, you crack me up. You can view all three Clearasil spots here and the new Carl's Jr. mentioned in the ABC story here. While you're at it, watch Van Halen's Hot for Teacher too (I don't remember that video causing a stir in the 80s).

Here's the latest campaign for Farmer's Insurance from Campbell-Ewald, Biscuit director Noam Murro and Animal Logic. Three of the spots (Wind, Commute and Morning Ritual) have been circulating for a couple of weeks, but Stolen Car has just been completed and is mine (and Noam's) favourite. Music and sound design is by Nylon Studios. View the full credits here.

Director Brian Lee Hughes' orgasm lesson
While shooting a campaign for Lavalife with Zig in Toronto, OPC director Brian Lee Hughes had to teach a Spanish-speaking actor how to say "orgasm". The result is this funny outtake which has been up on YouTube for a month and is Shoot Magazine's iSpot today. I also read somewhere that the actor never made the final cut for the spot.

Harvey Nichols Backstage Action
I've always thought it a bit weird when companies show you the animals you eat in TV spots (I really don't want to see a cow before I eat a steak). But I love this new Harvey Nichols spot and the PR blurb here definitely made me hungry. Agency is DDB London.
