| Psyop's Evil Gas Pump for Michelin |
| |
Here's Psyop's first Michelin spot, Evil Gas Pump (I hear there are more in the works). As always, Psyop does not disappoint with their character design and attention to detail, they even designed money for this world, and I don't think the Michelin Man has ever looked this good. Kinda hunky. Agency is TBWA Chiat Day New York. Full credits are here.

| Between |
| |
"Between" is a short film by Tim Bollinger of Via Grafik. This dark, surreal piece travels through grounds and walls and into moments stuck in time. As Tim puts it, “It’s a journey through worlds of the subconscious, allowing us to catch sinister glimpses of the human psyche’s ambivalence.” Love the seamless transitions. Scooped from Motionographer.

| Recycle Your Levi's |
| |
Here's a great idea from Levi's - a new label encouraging people to "recycle" or donate their old jeans. Great idea for your old clothes too (I filled up two bags last night that are going to charity). The tags will start appearing in jeans starting in January 2010, there's already a site up & I hear that there are virals in the works. Agency is BBDO West. Scooped from Make the Logo Bigger.

I found this Castle Lite beer ad over on AdFreak. I like the idea of a Vanilla Ice comeback via an ad, but this ad just lets him down. Could have been funny with better creative or execution. Yes, I used the words "execution" and "Vanilla Ice" in the same post. Agency is Ogilvy South Africa.

Here's another beautiful spot from Biscuit Filmworks director Noam Murro (see October 6th Emerald Cities post). Lost Barrel is for Jameson via TBWA Chiat Day, New York. Board's Ed White describes it as, "Whisky worth dying for. Well, diving for at least" (why can't I be that clever on a Monday AM?). It was shot in New Zealand and reminds me a bit of The Piano. Full credits are here.

| Glam-up your Monday with some Whore's Mascara |
| |
How can you not love a group called Whore's Mascara? Hell, if there was a mascara called "Whore Black", I'd probably buy it. I've often thought there should be a "Slut Red" lipstick too. I digress. Here's a fantastic new vid from Whore's Mascara for their song Monogamous. Love the sexy-cheeky-glam of it all. It's directed by legendary fashion photographer Patrik Andersson. Thanks to Alex at Blacklist for the scoop (& LOVE your cameo x).

| My Neighbour Jerks My Chicken |
| |
These new outdoor ads for the Toronto Association of Business Improvement Areas (TABIA for short) are certainly eye-catching. The "My Neighbour Jerks My Chicken" is by far my favourite but a friend and I did drive past the "My Neighbour Neutered My Dog" one the other night and had a lengthy discussion about it. We both agreed that the first thing that popped into our heads upon reading it was that the neighbour was mad at the dog for barking too much or digging up flowers so decided to hurt it. Either way, we talked about it. There are nine executions in the campaign, created by The Backroom Agency, but I placed my favs here. Thanks to Mauro for sending my way.

| Crush for The Happiness Project |
| |
Crush Toronto created this interactive installation as part of The Happiness Project which ran during Pop Montreal. Crush's Gary Thomas explains the installation:
We worked with Crush technical engineers Rudy Ledvinka and Scott Carradice to design the room with a variety of sensors and switches which would trigger layers of sound as drawers were opened and people sat on the bed or chair. We also built a CG model of the room with an animated man, representing Mr. Gowrie, the man who’s narration formed the basis of our song. We had the CG model made as four physical models which we mounted in the chest of drawers, each accompanied by a story which fleshed out the narrative in the song. We added a few lights and that was that.
The piece ran during Pop Montreal in the Happiness Project’s temporary headquarters on Hutchison Street. Montreal is an awesomely great place for this kind of thing, and there were crowds every day, with people carefully checking out each room and then enjoying cookies in the kitchen with the organizers from Artist Bloc.
We were surprised at the reaction. People found it incredibly powerful. Some cried, most checked out everything and some sat mesmerized on the bed watching the projection. Everyone had a different experience with Mr. Gowrie. It was an incredibly useful exercise for us, being that we’re used to delivering finished visuals which are meant to be seen passively. This was a whole new world for us, and one that we want to explore further.

I saw this ad in a mag last week while I was getting my nails done....um, I mean out at an important client meeting. At first I thought the cat looked like it had been kicked in the privates and I had to read the text at the bottom to get it. Perhaps the smell of nail polish was affecting my perception. I actually snapped a pic of it with my iPhone because I wanted to post it here, but now it's making the rounds on the net so I was able to grab a jpg (scooped from The Curious Brain via AdLand). The ads were shot in New York by Lyndon Wade. Agency is DDB West.

| Perspectives on a Girl |
| |
Perspectives on a Girl is the first annual Girl Guides of Canada online film festival created by john st., Toronto. The inaugural collection of nine short films have been created by talented female artists as an artistic expression of the issues young women face today - revealing why now, more than ever, Girl Guides is a necessary aspect of a young girl’s life.
The films are all created around the theme “Girls need Guides”. The artists and directors were asked to delve into issues young girls face as they try to grow up right in Canada today - and become confident, resourceful and courageous and able to make a difference in the world.
View the nine films at Perspectives on a Girl or on YouTube. Full credits. I don't like to pick favs (but I will) - my favorite films are Explore, Different, Dream, My Media Activism, Population of this City and I really love the casting and performances in I am A Girl.

| Crush's Lil’ Ronnies |
| |
Ron James is a Canadian comedian who has a TV show on CBC here in Canada. Crush, Toronto has been working with him to create animated segments called "Lil’ Ronnies" for his show. They have made some pretty funny stuff - check out Superball and Bath (I find the latter a little creepy but I like it). Here's some notes from Gary Thomas, Crush Creative Director, on the work:
We have been working with Ron, and his producer Lynn Harvey, for four years on their New Years specials for the CBC. When the CBC gave Ron the go ahead to do his own series, we were thrilled to be a part of it. Ron wanted to develop an animated segment based on the package we did for his "Back Home" special which was a cut out style that followed him as a child in Cape Breton. For the series we used adult heads and children's bodies, which is occasionally creepy (in a cool way). We co-directed the spots with Imported Artists' Dale Heslip and had a crew of ten animators working on the twelve episode series. To create the spots we used a combination of 2D software packages in a pipeline we developed on Knight Fever, Chris Minos' short film completed in the spring of this year.
The series is our first foray into long form animation, and has been a real eye opener for a studio seriously suffering from ADD.
The spots are also posted on Crush's Vimeo channel here and here. Full credits.

| An Open Mind is Advised |
| |
Every year I look forward to seeing TBWA Vancouver's campaign for VIFF - Vancouver International Film Festival. The theme for this year's campaign is An Open Mind Is Advised, which tips a hat to the fact that the subject matter and international nature of many films at the festival are best viewed with an open mind. The fantastic three in-theatre spots, Disturbing, Sexuality and Subtitles, are directed by Tim Godsall ( OPC, Toronto and Biscuit Filmworks, Los Angeles) and are edited by Geoff Hounsell, Arcade Edit, Los Angeles. Full credits are posted here. TBWA Vancouver also worked with 3-D illustrator Alex McLeod to create this amazing festival poster.

| Nuit Blanche - One White Light |
| |
Director/DOP/Photographer Steve Gordon, along with pals Gary Holme and Adam Smith, did some unofficial and impromptu Nuit Blanche photography - a series called One White Light. Note from Steve Gordon - "outside Gary's apartment, in the courtyard, we set up a shooting space under one of the lights attached to the wall. People from the street would stand under the light and we would photograph them."
A selection of pics are posted here and more are on facebook.
